Stamina

I agree the Perkins' idea that the stamina is essential for leaders and for their action. In the book ,Perkins totally disagree to the idea that "A leader needs to be there 100 percent or not at all-even if it means sacrificing your health;that's what it means to be a leader.", but I think this is partly true. Once a person become the leader, the person should think of the whole organization, not only him/herself. Of course it has great importance that leaders must take care of themselves, but in order to become the good model for other members leaders may be required more than they can do easily. Leaders' works and duties are essentially additional to basic works and duties as a member of a team. So good right hand man is necessary for leaders so that leaders can share their burden.

Optimism and Reality

After reading chapter 3 "Optimism and Reality", I notice that I've changed after enter university.

I'm used to be a optimistic person like McCarthy, think I can endure and overcome the situation. Also, I think of the reality ans search the solution. But I know now I'm not simply such a optimistic person, or even I can say now I'm pessimist. After reading this chapter I found that this change happened maybe because of the different situation. I used to be optimistic in the situation that I fight only by myself like Japanese entrance examination, or in the football club. I was just a participant. But now I'm trying to become a leader who should, according to Perkins, spread the optimism and make the atmosphere good. From of old, I'm so pessimistic when I think of the others surrounding.

Then, my answer to Q.1 is that I basically say to myself optimistic when the problem is only related to me. But I say to myself pessimistic when it comes to the problem related not only to me but to others. If the problem is only the matter of myself, I can become optimistic like "It goes well, maybe.", and think of reality. But if there are other people included in the problem, I cannot easily be optimist.

The answer to Q.2 is... I can't come up with so easily. I think of that through the class, but I think maybe I can trust others!

Vision and Quick Victories

Long term vision

For me, is that I want to become a person who can think of others in any scenes, like business scene or private scene with colleague, friends, or families. I don't sure this vision is appropriate to take the Dynamic You class, but anyway, this is what I mean to be.

In addition, now I'm Jr. band concert master of ICU Modern Music Society, and I'm going to be the Reg. concert master. I think so-called "leaders" should think of all members in community. I think the leaders should have both reality eye and idealistic eye. They should manage the risk toward their community, and seek their ideal existence style of community. Also, to achieve this aim,I think leaders should cooperate with some other "sub-leader"members in their community. I don't want to use the phrase "use people", but actually it is hard for one person to grasp all member's now-going situation and their thinking.

Short term goal

To achieve this long term vision, what I can do now is simply talk to members as many as possible. before the number of people I think of become large, I should learn how members think of something like music, members their life and so on. By doing this, maybe we can trust each other, and eventually some of them will be the "sub-leaders" I think. And of course, as mentioned in Leading at the Edge, I must show myself practice hard. This is fundamental part of leaders that they works hard. Moreover, they should work harder than others, ideally.

Feb. 8 class

I did the political compass, and result was

Economic Left/Right: -2.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.74

I think it is in reason for me. This posotion is similar to Gandhi.
In the class, we discussed some political concepts, especially socialism and democracy and capitalism. From fall term I'm interested Politics as a major, so now I'm taking the International Politics. So now I feel this relation between ARW class and IP is good.
Japan now advocates democracy, and its economic system is capitalism. However, I think now we can say that we have the socialism system like medicare or annual pension. But if Japanese government states that Japan is socialism state, it evoke extreme reaction from all over the world. The reason why such reaction is easily considered is that we experienced the Cold War in history. As Rab said in the class, we can advocate the very basic idea of communism, "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need", because it seems good society in which people help each other. But we don't like communism. I think it is because if we adopt communism, we lost almost all liberty like where we live or what we buy or what we listen or what we say. It's not comfortable, of course. What I want to mean here is that this catch phrase represent only good aspect of communism, financial equality and helping each other, but it'S not all of communism.

Jan. 27 class

In this class we watched "STUFF" made by a group. (http://www.storyofstuff.com/index.php) I thought in the video there were some biases. They show what they want to show, means the fact of US. But I could receive the main idea what they intend to show. That is now-going consumeristic society is not "sustainable". It destroys the environment, and ecological system. We should always become critical.

Jan. 25 class

Rab couldn't come to this class...please take care!
In this class we talked about how to predict the future. What do we need when we want to predict? In our group, we think first we have to decide what future we want to know. The word "future" has so broad and ambiguous meaning, so we have to narrow down the meaning of the future. For example a country's future, a company's future...but I think finally we find ourselves looking at individuals.
Then we need various information. Wataru said that we can decide what kind of information we need by thinking of what we use when we make our day plan. I thought it is very useful.
